Playwright Heidi Schreck's boundary-breaking play breathes new life into our Constitution and imagines how it will shape the next generation of Americans.
Fifteen year old Heidi earned her college tuition by winning Constitutional debate competitions across the United States. In this hilarious, hopeful and achingly human new play, she resurrects her teenage self in order to trace the profound relationship between four generations of women and the founding document that shaped their lives.
Schreck's timely and galvanizing play became a sensation off-Broadway before transferring to Broadway where it received two Tony Award nominations and was a Pulitzer finalist, among countless other accolades. The New York Times hailed What the Constitution Means to Me as "not just the best play to open on Broadway so far this season, but also the most important."
*Content warning: This play addresses many difficult issues, ranging from abortion to domestic abuse and many things in between.
Directed by Abby Waddoups
General Admission: $24

Directed by Shawn Whitsell
Presented by Destiny Theatre Experience

"Buffalo Soldier" is stirring drama that takes place when, in the summer of 1874, three soldiers of the “all negro” tenth cavalry and their white commander go on a dangerous reconnaissance mission to establish an outpost in the heart of Comanche territory. Shortly after making camp they inadvertently capture a Comanche brave and soon discover that he is none other than Chief Quanah Parker, the government’s most wanted renegade. As the night grows darker, the life and death stakes get higher. The tensions that erupt are multilevel and multiracial: between the black soldiers and their white captain, between the soldiers and the defiant warrior–and mostly, among the soldiers themselves, of which the LA Times said “GRIPPING. A wham bam, thrilling adventure that rings with clarion urgency!” .

As the story unfolds, a time shift reveals the identity of the building’s active spirit, who lived as a young woman in that same apartment 82 years earlier. Before long, Monica and her new friends uncover the traumatic events that led to this young girl's death, and why she still inhabits #222. The parallel stories come to a head, as past meets present in the most unexpected manner. Sarah Saturday (Gardening, Not Architecture)
FILMS BY
Dycee Wildman
CHOREOGRAPHY BY
Joi Ware
Voyage is the latest multimedia project from Nashville-based music and performance artist Sarah Saturday (also known as Gardening, Not Architecture), featuring a mix of vibrant original songs (produced by Boom Forest) performed live to backing tracks, innovative short films (directed by Sarah’s long-time collaborator, filmmaker Dycee Wildman), dance (choreographed by Joi Ware), audio sampling, and spoken word.
This live visual album is an invitation to audiences to tap into something truly vulnerable within themselves, creating a safe space for whatever feelings may arise. The stage play explores the shifting relationship we have with our complex and layered identities – those parts of ourselves both positive and negative that are always trying to protect us, sometimes to our detriment. Only by confronting and befriending these innermost parts of ourselves can we find peace within, and only from this ground of peace within can we truly begin the work of building a more peaceful world around us.
About the Artist Sarah Saturday is a musician, producer, writer, and performance artist also known as Gardening, Not Architecture. She has released several albums, singles, remixes, videos, films, and multimedia performances since 2007, and played over 200 shows in the U.S. and Canada since 2009. She has scored music for film and TV, including creating the original score for the feature film Superpowerless. Since relocating to Nashville in 2012, Sarah has made a name for herself in the Nashville performance art community with her deeply vulnerable, complex, visually stunning performances.

It is the story of her memory and legend as told by a young high school student who searched for closure after losing contact, a nurse practitioner and HIV/AIDS care trailblazer who befriended her, and a woman in recovery who commits to her cause and champions her work.

Excited to announce this show FMRL is presenting at Darkhorse Theatre as part of the Jazz Road grant series, a national initiative of South Arts and funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation with additional support from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Matthew Shipp is a genius musician, one of the greatest pianists of his generation.
Here's a snippet of former Nashville Scene editor Jack Silverman's recollections of Matthew Shipp's last solo piano concert 15 years ago in Nashville at a Primitive Baptist Church on Indiana in the Nations:
"I’ve seen a ton of shows since moving to Nashville 15 years ago, but pianist Matthew Shipp’s 2006 solo set at a church on Indiana Avenue still stands out as the most mind-blowing performance I’ve witnessed. It was an astonishing display, as if he had consumed the entirety of popular music, broken it down to its genetic code, then reassembled the DNA into a seemingly infinite number of mutations: familiar, delicate, unnerving, harmonically dense, nostalgic, atonal, pulsating, arrhythmic — and that was just the first 60 seconds.
Classical allusions, straight-ahead jazz changes and simple melodies would emerge out of cacophony, then recombine in ways that contradicted their usual associations. A jarring “Summertime,” in particular, seemed loaded with political overtones. Even though the crowd was predominantly indie-rock types there to see openers Lambchop and Hands Off Cuba, the avant-garde jazz legend got a spontaneous and boisterous standing ovation like few I’ve seen."

Duet for Theremin & Lap Steel (ATL)
We at FMRL are delighted to present Duet for Theremin & Lap Steel and Belly Full of Stars. Like the best ambient music, theirs is consistently engaging and timbrally rich, the sonic fruit of labored synthesis cultivated with an openness to chance.
In an era of psychic noise, it's nice to listen, actively or not, to music, or non music, that calls one's attention to detail, nuance, to sine-waved sonic filigree.
This is music that depends on collective silence and deep listening. This is a sonic celebration on the subtlety of change.
Join us for this and more ephemeral experiences."

Presented by Street Theatre
MUSIC & LYRICS BY DAVID NEHLS
BOOK BY BETSY KELSO
Performances Thursday-Saturday at 7:30pm
Proof of vaccination and masks required for audience. All cast & crew will be vaccinated.
It’s holiday time down in Armadillo Acres (North Florida’s premier mobile-living community), and everyone’s filled with warmth and beer. But when a freak bout of amnesia strikes the trailer park Scrooge, neighborly love is put to the test. Be on hand as Betty, Lin, and Pickles jingle all the way with some new neighbors in an all-new, all-trailer-park musical! This companion to the original GREAT AMERICAN TRAILER PARK MUSICAL is just as much of a cat-fightin', sun-worshippin', chair-throwin’ good time-—but with tinsel and Keg Nog.

"Virtuosic free jazz bassist Michael Bisio returns to Music City for a solo performance at Nashville's historic Darkhorse Theatre. Bisio is best known as bassist in the Matthew Shipp Trio. They have performed together in Nashville with the trio and as a duo.
On this visit we will be treated to a solo performance by the Bennington College bass professor, Michael Bisio, who will channel a lifetime of influences into an hour-long improvisation physically pulled, plucked, and bowed into being. This is a show you won't want to miss, especially if you consider that his musical resume reads like a who's-who of free jazz and improvising musicians including extensive touring with Charles Gayle, Joe McPhee, Sonny Simmons & Barbara Donald and collaborations with Pauline Oliveros, John Tchicai, Eyvind Kang and more.
Michael Bisio is an incredibly skilled technician. Aficionados could identify his signature bow work while blindfolded. And while such technique is impressive on its own, music is not mere sport, yet such athleticism is required for musicians to play freely improvised music at the speed of thought. Jazz musicians are tasked with contributing to a language that they are simultaneously preserving. Jazz tradition is a metalanguage to a free improvising bassist using the upright as a tool for creating lines to walk between worlds. Bisio believes "that everything can be broken down into vibration and therefore feel" and has "come to understand that the physical world and spiritual world are very intertwined, and at the best of times, for [him], they are one."
Here's a video showing a solo performance to give an idea of what his playing is like:
